![]() Each one with a distinct personality (though sharing several commonalities), each one carrying a female name, each one constructed in a surrealist way that defies time and space. In a way, the true characters of Invisible Cities are the cities themselves. No, there are no other characters, not really. Neither Marco Polo nor Kublai Khan are the main characters of the novel. In narrative terms, the novel is about imagination and creativity, reality and identity (though in a rather general, abstract way), and – particularly – the way we create assumptions.Īnd so, with this in mind, let’s talk about characters – so that I can dispel one such assumption. You see, as I often say, literature is more than a sum of its parts, and no other book I’ve read recently portrays this more skillfully than Calvino’s novel. The plot doesn’t matter either, and I’m delighted I need just one sentence to describe what the book is about: Marco Polo and Kublai Khan discuss the various cities the former has visited. Ridiculously, Amazon lumps it with such categories as “Classic Action & Adventure”, “Biographical Historical Fiction”, and even “Historical Italian Fiction”, which are only some of the categories Invisible Cities amusingly deconstructs. We could call it experimental fiction, surrealist, postmodern, it doesn’t matter. ![]() Invisible Cities is a book that defies categorization Review of Invisible Cities: Genre, Plot, Narrative And so, in this review of Invisible Cities my goal – as with everything else I review – is ultimately to show you what the book feels like, rather than what it is. But reviews aren’t about what we like, but about why we like them. With these in mind, it will likely be no surprise to hear that I loved Calvino’s book. It’s what art should really be like: Focusing on affect, foregoing plot. Invisible Cities defies characterization. In that review, too, I had real trouble placing the work in a certain framework. If that way of describing it sounds familiar, you’ve likely read my review of Confessions of a Mask, by Yukio Mishima. To amend this, listen to Polo’s observation, “it is not the voice that commands the story it is the ear.So, what should a review of Invisible Cities, by Italo Calvino be like? One thing’s for certain: It can’t be like any other review, because the novel (if one may still call it that) is like no other, either. Within the cohesive empire, the utopian ideal of the cities remains unachieved - whether aimed through the ontological set-up of Plato’s Ideal City in The Republic, or down the centuries, when Calvino sat to write about the cities, which could not be validated. Khan’s aspiration to systematically bracket Polo’s accounts echoes the political realities. At every step, Polo defeats the purpose of the frames and questions its boundaries that refrain him from putting the blocks together. To have a better understanding of Polo’s narration, Khan deploys - chessboard and atlas - as the predetermined tools to lend a structure to Polo’s commentary. Inevitably, it barred me from reading the book under the lens of political empire and sovereign logics. Under the current context, while rereading the text, I was taken by surprise that in the past, I had been caught within the poetic-philosophy framework of the cities. Largely, the text’s liminal position between modern and postmodern forms catches the attention of the readers and critic alike. Even the English Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge has dedicated a long poem Kubla Khan to the ‘slight disposition’ of the emperor of the Tartars who ruled as far as the regions of current day EuroAsia.Įarly sailing ship for voyages of discovery Image Credit: Courtesy of Creative Commons Even if the cities documented in the book are as fantastical as the Be'er Sheva, the travel accounts of the real-time Italian explorer Marco Polo and Kublai Khan’s court were made popular in the 13th century Italian Renaissance with a travelogue The Travels of Marco Polo written down by Rustichello da Pisa and Polo. The second part holds true for this book - with less than 150 pages it would force you to take long pauses before turning a page and often even moving to the next paragraph to understand the meaning of the unsaid ‘between the lines’. If the cover of the book does not affirm the quality of the book, then the number of pages is nowhere the yardstick to measure the intensity of the read. My first encounter of the bond between these two countries came with the two protagonists - Venetian traveller Marco Polo and the Tartars emperor Kublai Khan - of Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, published in 1972. Book cover of Invisible Cities Image Credit: Courtesy of the author ![]() ![]() I tried out the G930 with excerpts from Handel's "Messiah," "Carry Me Back" by Old Crow Medicine Show and "Salty Dog" by Flogging Molly. Presets for different genres could have made a world of difference here, which only makes their absence more keenly felt. Music sounds flat, bland and distant, and equalization options can only help so much. The G930 is like the G230 and G430 in many ways, and when it comes to the sound quality of music, this similarity is a drawback. Unless you're an expert in sound mixing, finding the right balance for each different game and media program is a complicated and laborious process. The only drawback is that the sound equalizer, while robust, offers no presets. If you choose, you can assign the G1, G2 and G3 buttons on the headset to in-game commands. The software will even scan your computer for games and create profiles automatically for them. Given how many headsets lack this feature (Corsair, Razer, even other Logitech devices), being able to make profiles puts the G930 way ahead of its competitors. Not only can you control all of your Logitech gaming gadgets from one place, but its clean, intuitive interface makes it easy to do exactly what you want.Īs with Logitech mice and keyboards, the software for the G930 headset lets you create different sound profiles for different games. The Logitech Gaming Software is one of my favorite gaming peripheral programs, and with good reason. This is on par with other wireless headsets, but those who routinely engage in marathon gaming sessions may want to stick with wired models, if possible. The G930 boasts about 10 hours of battery life, and the dongle's extension stand doubles as a charging station. After you set it up once, you'll never have connection woes again, unless you somehow forget how to press a button. Whereas the H2100 requires a tetchy "press and hold this button" process, the G930 uses a simple on/off switch. There's no lag, no inconsistency, no hiss, and the headset works up to a range of 40 feet.Įven better: Connecting the headset is extremely simple. Not only is wireless setup easy and foolproof, but the quality is just about perfect. I had nothing but nice things to say about the wireless on the Corsair H2100 headset, a close G930 competitor, but between the two, the G930 wins this round. It's probably better to just use the mic as-is and leave voice modulation to the professionals. You can even modulate the pitch and tone of your voice, or use a voice avatar (such as an alien or a robot), but I found these features rather obnoxious. The microphone is likewise clear and audible. I traipsed around Revolutionary-era Paris for a while, listening to the conversations of the citoyens and engaging in swordfights with foppish aristocrats, but nothing bowled me over about the experience. The surround sound made it easy to tell where my opponents were coming from.Īssassin's Creed Unity, on the other hand, simply sounded OK. Every shot fired, every frantic jump and every exploding battle mech made me feel like I was on a futuristic battlefield instead of at a desk. Between mouse, keyboard and headset reviews, I have played a lot of Titanfall (and even gotten marginally less bad at it), and I've never heard it sound as good as with the G930. To my delight, the G930 is absolutely top-notch when it comes to competitive gameplay. He didn't feel the same pressure on his jaw that I did, however, and he found it comfortable overall, even after more than an hour of use. I handed the G930 off to a co-worker who said he found the device somewhat heavy, and that the earcups didn't fit well around the bottom of his ears. ![]() I have an amazing platform for you that will help you check that without physically going to the store. While looking through these accounts, you might find items that you like and wonder if your store has them. This is how you find some of the best clearance prices you have ever seen. Then, on the other sidebar, make sure you click on “for sale by ” and not all those million third party sellers. To find the best online clearance prices, all you have to do is just go into the search bar and just type in the word “clearance” and then sort them lowest to highest. However, they will not always price match to other Walmarts, because we have to remember that all the Walmart work independently of each other. One thing to know about Walmart clearance is that a Walmart store will price match to the price, and they will price match to other big box stores like Target and Amazon. ![]() So how do you know which items are on hidden clearance? Look for oddity: Different packaging in identical items, or irrelevant seasonal elements on the packaging might be a clue. Moreover, check out the dented can section for even more hot deals.īecause the store is so massive, sometimes the employees do not have time to mark down all of the clearance items. The discounts are often more than 50% off, so you can get a loaf of fresh baked bread for less than a dollar. In the grocery section, they put the bread and the dairy items on clearance the day before the “best before” date. While I always recommend that you check out the designated clearance section, do not forget to just walk the aisles and look for those yellow price tags. Therefore, when you know your store, you are going to have a better chance at finding those hidden clearances. What many people do not realize is that each Walmart store works independently of each other, so the manager from each store puts specific items on clearances based on what's selling and what is not selling, as well as what the store has left. The first way to find these hidden clearances is to know your store. What else can you do to improve your chances? This is when they want to clear off the shelves to make room for the new toys. Usually they happen at the end of December-January, and then again in July. The important thing is to know when these are going to happen. Next, if you are already a Walmart clearance aficionado, then you know that Walmart usually has the best of the best toy clearances compared to any other store, with discounts of up to 75-90%. ![]() ![]() So I just asked the manager if they were going on clearance, and he told me that he was going to put them on clearance the following Monday of the week following, so I came then and got them. I once saw someone on Instagram who bought specific dolls that I wanted for 75% off. Never be afraid to talk to the manager at your local Walmart. This usually lasts a day or two and there is a ton of stuff left over. Keep in mind that after every major holiday they do a 50-90% off sale on all of that merchandise. That is when they start marking items down, and if the sale is crazy hot, it is going to sell out fast. Go as early as possible – ideally, at five or six in the morning. In addition, I always recommend you go clearance shopping at the beginning of the day. As a general rule of thumb, the biggest markdowns happen on the first five days of the month. 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars. The divergent performance between the two graphics subtests are reflective of the particular workloads. The RX 580 was never intended for 4K gaming, and so is expectedly unsuitable. And despite its 4GB frame-buffer, the Fury X is able to hold its own despite having the bare minimum required VRAM. The results are largely unsurprising as we noticed historically and in our RX Vega review, AMD's graphics performance benefits more from DX12 environments than DX11. For the RX Vega cards, the default power profile (primary BIOS and 'Balanced'' profile) was used. NVIDIA’s 385.69 drivers and AMD’s Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.9.3 were the drivers used. We also checked the effect of enabling 11.6GB of HBCC on the Vega cards. Overall, on our 8-core Skylake X GPU test bench, we looked at 9 cards with and without async compute disabled: the Titan Xp, GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080, GTX 1070, GTX 980 Ti, RX Vega 64, RX Vega 56, RX 580, and R9 Fury X. In general, the Time Spy and Time Spy Extreme benchmark scores do not relate to one another. With that in mind, we are only reporting graphics subscores and framerates. In other words, the score/measurement is not dependent at all with the graphical rendering work. To preface, Time Spy Extreme’s CPU test is a simulation, and the benchmark measures average simulation time per frame. For the time being, an advance release has been made available to the press, and we’ve taken a quick look at the benchmark with a selection of modern cards. Time Spy Extreme will be released to the public on October 11. Like the original, Extreme was developed with input from Futuremark’s Benchmark Development Program, a group that includes AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA. Ultimately, Time Spy and Time Spy Extreme engine was built for DX12 from the ground up, and incorporates marquee DX12 features: asynchronous compute, explicit multi-adapter, and multi-threading. ![]() We’ve covered the technical aspects when Time Spy was first released, and the underlying details are likewise the same. Otherwise, the sequence remains the same: the Time Spy explores a museum with artifacts and terraria of Futuremark’s other benchmarks, past and present. While the benchmark does not require a 4K monitor, the typical video memory demands are still present: Time Spy Extreme has VRAM minimum of 4GB, a step up from Fire Strike Ultra’s 3GB. Where the original Time Spy scaled poorly on 10+ threads, Time Spy Extreme’s CPU test was redesigned for CPUs with 8 or more cores, and is additionally able to utilize AVX2 and AVX512 instruction sets. The original Time Spy was already more intensive than Fire Strike Ultra, and Time Spy Extreme brings that graphical punishment to 4K. Slotting into the 3DMark suite, Time Spy Extreme is available under the Advanced and Professional Editions on Windows, focusing on DX12 functionality on contemporary high-end graphics cards as well as high-core count processors. List of supported graphics and general-purpose computing APIs, including their specific versions. This week, Futuremark unveiled Time Spy Extreme, a 4K version of the DX12 gaming benchmark released last July. This is why it is often imperative for users to have a backup plan (usually by having a local copy of the files available). Just bear in mind though that lifetime, in this case, is often as long as the company operates or chooses to fulfill this particular offer. The range() function in Python is used to return sequential numbers. For each value, the loop prints the value multiplied by itself. List comprehension, dictionary comprehension, and generator expressions are three powerful examples of such expressions that are very useful. There’s no doubt that Python is a fantastic language, with powerful constructs and features to help create elegant, efficient code.
